Blog Publishing Idea #256
Somebody needs to come up with a box on the comment template where people can bust out a trackback to an earlier post they did in the same subject. As we all pile our archives into these massive heaps, it would be a nice way to keep them alive.
You know how it is, you see someone else talk about something you said a while back, but you don’t want to be a dork and leave a comment like, “cool- now everyone go check out what I wrote on the subject.” But, what if it was expected? What if there was already a box for you to paste the URL of a post you did on the subject? It could just be entered in the trackback section. We already ping each other when we reference each other’s posts. And, really, more people need to understand what trackacks are anyway.
This would create more of a web of useful dialogues. Posts of similar relevance would all be able to continue throughout the web. One would start here, resume there a month later and then pop up a bunch more places a year from then.
I’ll see what I can do to whip up something like it when I have a minute. In the meantime if anyone has seen something like it let me know.

i agree with you on this one…especially the part about people figuring out how to use trackbacks effectively.
another tool that i find useful is the technorati lookup tool that sits on my personal toolbar in firefox. when i am about to talk about something on my site, i’ll check to see who else has already posted about it - and that way maybe i’ll pick up new ideas, or even more links.
