National Geographic — TOKYO, Japan .– As photographer Ennosuke Fukuzawa captured the elusive species “Homo Toophatillus” in the wild, he had to keep nerves of steel; any movement would have startled the parent and the cub and this incredible picture would have been lost.
Ennosuke has been on the hunt for a closeup picture of the homo toophatillus since he was a boy growing up in Japan. He remembers the stories his grandfather told him of entire villages being slaugthered by herds of toophatillus, he’s been obsessed with them ever since.
In this rare photograph you can see a female toophatillus carrying a male by his groin towel. This is a mysterious act performed before engaging in a bloody mating ritual that lasts up to 10 hours. During mating the tiny male is periodically crushed by the overpowering size of the female. At the end of it the male lays dismemebered and covered in blood; a gory mess in which the female then bathes in and goes off to fight other females in battle that sceintists have named “sumo” (The Japanese word for “Obese Wrestling”)
